ESO GRAND TOUR CONCERT, SUNDAY 19TH OCTOBER

The culturally historic Grand Tour came to Worcestershire, and specifically Malvern St James on Sunday 19 October when the ESO String Orchestra painted glimpses of European cities at the turn of the 18th Century in both musical and narrated form.
Together with Royal Shakespeare Company actor Richard Derrington as narrator, the ESO Chamber Orchestra and soloists Michael Bochmann, George Ewart and Peter Adams gave a musical tour around the cultural heart of Europe.
Among the musical stops was London (for Purcell’s Chaconne), Leipzig (Bach, Concerto for 2 Violins), Paris (Couperin, Pieces en Concert), Madrid (Boccherini Minuet) and Köthen (Bach, Brandenburg Concerto No 3).
In Venice the Orchestra was joined by the Malvern St James Chamber Choir, who gave a superb performance of extracts from Vivaldi’s Gloria.
“The Grand Tour was a cultural and educational European travel itinerary which young aristocrats took throughout the 18th and 19th centuries,” explains ESO soloist Michael Bochmann. “Through this stunning music and atmospheric narration we are re-living the world as those travellers experienced it."
