DINNER AND DIPLOMACY AT MALVERN ST JAMES
Girls at Malvern St James had the chance to practise their diplomatic skills recently when their very own Model United Nations Society held an inaugural meeting.
Over their evening meal the girls, aged between 15 and 18 discussed child slavery and child labour in four groups, representing The Congo, Australia, United Arab Emirates and Poland. Adibah Yussoff, a Sixth Form Brunei scholar, proposed the resolution, with responses from the four countries represented.
Rachel Huntley, a teacher at the school said:
“One of the aims of the society is to encourage the girls to look at issues from a global perspective and hone their intellectual skills. Our first debate was extremely heated and lasted well past the end of dinner! There are a number of Model United Nations’ conferences around the country and abroad where our delegates could have the opportunity to meet students from other schools. Our first visit will be to Kingswood School in Bath where over 600 delegates are expected.
We have girls from 19 countries in our school and we believe it is vital that students leave us with a truly international vision, appropriate to the world in which they will live and work.”
